SD8 and CUPE 748 Ratify Agreement

School District No. 8 (Kootenay Lake) and the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 748 have ratified a renewed collective agreement under the Province’s Shared Recovery Mandate.

“I am pleased that SD8 and CUPE have completed what was a successful bargaining process and taken this very positive step of signing a renewed agreement. This agreement allows all of us to focus on what we do best – to create and support the best learning opportunities we can for every student and their families across the district,” said Superintendent Trish Smillie.

Made for Trades at Selkirk College

Selkirk College hosted the annual Made for Trades event at the Silver King Campus on March 3. 

Over 40 Grade 10 students from Salmo Secondary, Mount Sentinel Secondary, and L.V. Rogers Secondary spent the day learning more about a range of opportunities to train for a career in trades such as carpentry, electrical, welding, cooking, and hairdressing.

SD8 and CUPE 748 Conclude Mediation 

March 2, 2023  

School District No. 8 (Kootenay Lake) and the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 748 have completed mediation with parties proceeding to ratification in the coming weeks.  

The school district looks forward to working together with CUPE to focus on excellence for all learners in a nurturing environment.

Health and Safety - 15 New First Aid Attendants!

The district is a safer place now that 15 staff successfully completed or renewed their Occupational First Aid Level 1 and CPR training in January.

Bargaining Continues Between SD8 and CUPE 748

School District No. 8 (Kootenay Lake) (SD8) is actively engaged in bargaining with CUPE Local 748 to negotiate a renewed collective agreement under the Province’s Shared Recovery Mandate.

The union advised SD8 that CUPE members will take a strike vote. A strike vote is not a strike notice. This does not mean that CUPE staff will be going on strike.

Radon Testing Pilot Project in SD8

School District No. 8 (Kootenay Lake) is collaborating with Interior Health to test for radon in in district buildings including schools, as part of a province-wide pilot project initiated by Interior Health.
