SD8 invites feedback for 2019-2020 Budget Planning
Nelson, April 18, 2019 - The Kootenay Lake School District hosted their annual Partner Group Dinner Event this week in Nelson. Partner Groups from across the district were invited to the event to participate in the Budget Review Process, providing the Board the opportunity to collect valuable feedback directly from the various groups.
Parents, Principals, and representatives from the District’s labour associations and unions, CUPE, KLTF and KLPVP, were among 75+ participants that attended. Board Trustees, Student Trustees and Senior Administration circulated around the room throughout the evening, listening in on the thoughts and comments being generated at each table.
The District’s decision to use ThoughtExchange, a community intelligence software program, for the meeting proved to be an effective process for collecting and revealing table discussion insights in real-time.
“We were really pleased with how seamless the feedback collection process went,” commented Secretary-Treasurer Michael McLellan. “ThoughtExchange enabled us to collect meaningful input for next year’s Budget from the large number of people in attendance, from all important Partner Groups.”
Following a 30-minute Strategic & Budget Plan presentation by McLellan, participants were provided with three open-ended questions centered around strengthening the District’s Strategic Plan and making decisions on how best to allocate resources to attain the Board’s goals of learning, organizational excellence, engagement and relationship building.
Major topics that emerged from the process revealed considerable consensus around the need to continue investing in greater mental health supports and resources for inclusive education services. Also, professional development opportunities for both Teachers and CUPE support workers caring for diverse needs learners in the classroom, and the importance of Early Education initiatives rose to the top as important topics.
The Board is now formally inviting the public to participate in the discussion, and to provide input into next year’s Budget. Everyone is encouraged to visit the District website to learn more about the Budget Process at:

“The feedback we collect will be used to directly facilitate Board budget decisions for the 2019-2020 school year,” explained Superintendent Dr. Christine Perkins. “So we truly want to hear from as many people as possible.
A separate ThoughtExchange forum is also underway surrounding the 2019-2029 Facilities Planning process. For this online exchange, the public is being asked to provide input into how school facilities throughout the district can be improved.
